Bee and Butterfly in the Garden Bento

I bought some butter cakes from the supermarket yesterday, and packed some for my kids. The bentos looked rather plain, so I decided to decorate them with a bee and a butterfly, and some flowers. The decorative bits are actually:

  • White: Cheese and kamaboko
  • Pink: Kamaboko and ham
  • Orange: Smoked cheese and carrot
  • Brown: Mini wiener
  • Red: Artificial crab meat
  • Head: Quail egg
  • Black: Nori

I only boiled a small piece of each, and cut them with various shaped cutters. The quail eggs were “pinned” on the cake with 2 heart picks to prevent it from moving around. The mini wiener was pinned to the egg instead.

Hence, here are the bentos:

A bumble bee for my boy. I hope that he will eat the piece of pineapple!

A pink butterfly for my gal.

My kids will be quite full by having a piece of butter cake, so I cut down on the fruit portion. They can always have more once we get home. :)

very creative bento ideas. I have bought some bento cutters but have yet to put into use, actually have no idea what to do with them apart from using them to shape some bread :( need to get more ideas from you.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. :)

Agnes, different shaped of bread is always a good start. My early bentos are like those too. :)

very creative take on butterflies – have never seen them with cute kid-like faces before! i always love how you make the bento for your boy different than the one for your girl, too. these are both great showcases for how lovely and clever you are with your cutters ;-)

Hi, chanced upon your blog while google-ing for bento ideas. I just started preparing bentos for my kids and being not creative at all, I am having problems with designs. Your bentos are really really beautiful!!! I look forward to learning more from you :) Thanks!
