what a great mum you are, teaching your kids to draw and plan bento before preparing the meals. Me, I dont even plan my kids’ bento *embarassed grin*. Mine were all spur of the moment bentos,haha!

Shi-Chan, oh…NST.my and bento market are where I got my stuffs from mostly. My Shinkansen bento was bought from ebay Malaysia. I think these bentos are only sold in Japan, so unless u can get someone to buy them from u there?

hey thanks! but actually i wont quite consider this as my 1st charaben, cos it looks so pathetic! haha… i really am clueless as to how to decorate or wat to do. Guess its also cos i dont have tools to work with yet (still waiting for my NST stuff to arrive) so i can only cut them with bare hands. So time-consuming and i feel like my hands are so clumsy!

Btw, u know the cute face bentos like elmo, poohbear, my melody and tomica bento boxes? besides Bento Market Place, where else can i get them? They’re all out of stock at BMP. Only ebay? shipping costs are really a killer…

Chinnee, LOL! It’s kids bento mah, so just let them do whatever they want loh… Anyway, it’s my boy’s idea mostly, I just helped him to get what he has in mind by playing with his food.

Shi-Chan, congrats on your first charaben! LOL! Hello Kitty is always cute for bento, and I’m sure you will get the facial proportion right next time.
Yes, you can use margarine. I use butter or jam mostly. You definitely need a pair of tweezers in bentoing, so try to grab one from the art and craft section at Daiso. If you have gone thru my older post, maybe you have seen my boy using the tweezers too.
As for exacto knife, it’s not really necessary, unless you want to cut very delicate bits of nori or food. I started with normal kitchen knife too.

Hi Claire, welcome to my blog and thanks for your comment. Yes, the kamaboko I get here is just like yours, only the top is pink. So I always cut them into smaller pieces and freeze to extend the shell life. I would normally just slice and use the pink, but for the white part, some went into my kids’ mouths but some are great for details like ears, nose, hands and etc since the color is white and there is always a possibility of using it.

One question. You use Kamaboko (like for the pink flower in this bento). I can only find either totally white kamaboko or white with pink top kamaboko but not TOTALLY PINK kamaboko in Singapore. Do you just use the top and slice the pink top off?
