Kids Bento Again

I bought some cutters from Daiso yesterday. Again, it’s an addiction. :P Whenever I go to Daiso, I will surely check out the bento tools (more like baking tools) section and see if I can resist myself from getting more tools. :P Anyway, I brought these cutters:

Simple shape cutters

Frankly, I don’t have anything in mind when I bought those cutters. But when I showed them to my kids last night, my boy wanted to try them out. He picked the house and airplane cutters and thus I asked him to draw a sketch with a house and a plane, so that he has an idea on how to decorate them.

He told me that he wanted a house with a lot of windows, a door WITH a DOOR KNOB (Haha!), a plane in the sky, some clouds, the sun, a bird and some flowers.

My gal asked her daddy to start for her, and then she continued her drawing by herself. She wanted a house, the sun and a bird.

After that, I talked to the kids about picking a few main “characters” as it would be hard to fit everything in. So, after some “brainstorming” (and washed their hands, of course), my kids started their bento work.

My boy’s working on his bento decoration. He can manage on his own with my guidance now.

As for my gal, she did what she does best….play with the food and eat it!

She tried to slice the steamed carrot with her toy knife. So, it was so smashed, I could not use it for the sun. LOL!

After my boy had done with his “work”, I wrapped the pieces in cling wrap and refrigerated them in air tight container. I did the decoration work for my gal since she didn’t do much.

So, here are their bentos before decoration:

It’s just something light with sandwiches, custard apple, strawberry and watermelon.

And here they are after I placed in the details:

My boy’s bento. He took a big piece of ham! LOL!

That’s why his sister is left with a smaller piece of ham, which is only enough for the roof and a flower. :P

Here’s the little bird requested by my gal…

I cut an oval, a circle and a small triangle for its wing. The beak was a tiny bit of carrot, which I managed to “save” last night.

My boy is happy with today’s bento. I guess it means a lot to him since he made the decoration part by himself.

P/S: If your kids do not like the taste of cheese and fruits, please replace cheese with egg sheet.

    creative and gorgeous!

    Just to share:
i attempted a HK bread sandwich today (dont have any tools at all yet) and it turned out bit imitation-looking! haha…I realised the position of the eyes and nose were wrong. (just read ur archive abt the positioning of eyes and nose)

    Qn:
When u place the nori as whiskers & eyes on the bread, do u use anythg to make it stick on the bread? I used margarine…
And with bare hands, i was like struggling with the delicate whiskers cos they crumple so easily! Do u use the exacto knife each time or just normal kitchen knife will do? Or a tweezer-like tool to pick up?

    Hi there

You are really creative. : ) I love your blog. Thanks for sharing.

One question. You use Kamaboko (like for the pink flower in this bento). I can only find either totally white kamaboko or white with pink top kamaboko but not TOTALLY PINK kamaboko in Singapore. Do you just use the top and slice the pink top off?

Thanks Ellena and SIG for your kind comments. :)

Shi-Chan, congrats on your first charaben! LOL! Hello Kitty is always cute for bento, and I’m sure you will get the facial proportion right next time. :)
Yes, you can use margarine. I use butter or jam mostly. You definitely need a pair of tweezers in bentoing, so try to grab one from the art and craft section at Daiso. If you have gone thru my older post, maybe you have seen my boy using the tweezers too. :)
As for exacto knife, it’s not really necessary, unless you want to cut very delicate bits of nori or food. I started with normal kitchen knife too.

Hi Claire, welcome to my blog and thanks for your comment. :) Yes, the kamaboko I get here is just like yours, only the top is pink. So I always cut them into smaller pieces and freeze to extend the shell life. I would normally just slice and use the pink, but for the white part, some went into my kids’ mouths :P but some are great for details like ears, nose, hands and etc since the color is white and there is always a possibility of using it.

    shopping mum,

hey thanks! but actually i wont quite consider this as my 1st charaben, cos it looks so pathetic! haha… i really am clueless as to how to decorate or wat to do. Guess its also cos i dont have tools to work with yet (still waiting for my NST stuff to arrive) so i can only cut them with bare hands. So time-consuming and i feel like my hands are so clumsy!

Btw, u know the cute face bentos like elmo, poohbear, my melody and tomica bento boxes? besides Bento Market Place, where else can i get them? They’re all out of stock at BMP. Only ebay? shipping costs are really a killer… :(

Shi-Chan, oh…NST.my and bento market are where I got my stuffs from mostly. My Shinkansen bento was bought from ebay Malaysia. I think these bentos are only sold in Japan, so unless u can get someone to buy them from u there? :)

  11. Shi-chan, 13. July 2009, 14:57

hmm ok…guess i just have to hope they quickly replenish their stock soon.
I found some on ebay site though..but not sure if reliable sellers lah.
    thanks for replying anyway! :)

what a great mum you are, teaching your kids to draw and plan bento before preparing the meals. Me, I dont even plan my kids’ bento *embarassed grin*. Mine were all spur of the moment bentos, haha!
