Bento#156: Little Car Bento
I prepared some spam sandwiches for hubby this morning, so I might as well pack some for my kids. I have never done any bentos with cars, but since we were having hotdog buns, they are perfect to be cut as cars. I cut the hotdog buns last night because I knew that I would be spending some time frying the spam and fixing hubby’s sandwiches. So, this is what I’ve prepared last night:

I cut a hotdog bun into halves.

I removed a small part of the top of the bun before storing them away in a food container.
This morning, I woke up early to fry the spam and fix the sandwiches. After that, I continued with fixing the buns into mini cars. First, I spreaded some jam between the bread. Then…

I pinned some mini wieners onto the buns so that the cars have wheels and steering wheels.

I used a cutter to form the “eyes” of the cars. You can use any oval or round cutter of your choice.

I punched the eyes and mouths of the cars by using this shoe puncher.

Here’s the mini cars.
Then, I proceeded to decorating the spam.

These are the cutters I used to cut the spams before frying them.

I added some cheese and kamaboko to the spam. Actually, I wanted to fix My Melody for my gal, but I noticed that I didn’t use the right size of oval cutter, so it didn’t turn out nice.

Here are the Carl’s punchers I used for nori.
After that, I slipped the spams into the cars, and packed some fruits into the bentos. So, here’s the end result:

My boy’s bento with a teddy bear “driving” a car, and some fruits. I bought some Hello Kitty chocolates from Aki-ko, so I packed some for my kids.

Here’s my gal’s bento with My Melody and Hello Kitty (the chocolate candy).
Too bad my gal’s My Melody doesn’t look like My Melody.
Some Japanese bento bloggers like Akinoichigo and Yukiko have shared a few bentos featuring cars before, so if you are interested, please hop over their blogs for a peep.

LOL! This is really really cute.
I know this is a stupid question but how did you manage to get the pieces of cheese to stick on the bun?
very very cute!!! i lovin’ it!
hahahhahahha, Amy, the cars are so cute!!!! Teddy drive the cars! Good idea! The wheels and steering wheels look so cute! I like it. Thanks for sharing, i should try to do this and surprise my boys. hahahahhaha
Hi everyone, thanks for your comments.
Wena, I just leave the cheese on.
They should stick on bread, but if yours keep falling off, try to spread some jam or butter at the cheese first. It acts as “glue”, or you can try spaghetti strips.
Ta Shoppingmum.
My brain is hurting a bit because of the initial thinking and planning to do these bentos.
It’s also hard when one is trying to cut out ham and cheese and luncheon meat. Wahliaw… >.<
This one I really salute u!!
U r my idol!
This is such an awesome idea! Just thinking of who I want in the drivers seat.
Cool cars! A Big Thanks for the tutorial.
Wow! This is so cute… It has 3D effect… Ha ha… U r really good… Btw, can i know where do u get the Carl’s Smiley Puncher & also the Sad Face Puncher? Really wanted to get a few different design but it was so diffcult to get it from here… Have been looking around in MPH & Harris but couldn’t get it… Thx…
Thanks everyone again.
Melissa, my friend Arlene got them for me from Ipoh, and the sad face puncher was bought by Ellena from Singapore. I can’t find Carl’s here in Bangkok. You are right, it’s very hard to find all the designs from Carl’s.
Way cool! I’d love to give it a try. Thanks for the tutorial. Can’t wait to make this for hubby and my toddler! Love your blog and bentos

Hi! Amy, thanks for ur reply. Just got back from s’pore & manage to get the sad face puncher plus some others design. I still couldn’t find the smiley puncher. I think i will need to look for it somewhere else… Understand that all this puncher is very useful in preparing lovely bento… Ha ha…
Hi,
love the melody and the car. v cute!
a silly question, the spaghetti strips used to pin the sausages can’t be eaten right? err….so we tell our kiddos to eat the sausage n throw the strips har?
Joyce, they can be eaten.
It’s safer to use spaghetti strips, as comparing to toothpicks. Just use the thinnest one, and make sure they are not too long.
oh great….will give it a try next time. tks
shoppingmum,
