Bento#129: The Big Bad Wolf Bento

I got this idea from Ellena when we were chatting about fixing some story bentos for her boy. Then, I felt like fixing a bedtime story bento for my kids too. Both my kids like stories involving the big bad wolf, especially Red Riding Hood, and The Wolf and The Lamb (it’s a Chinese story where the wolf made a lot of excuses to eat the lamb). I can’t find the story about The Wolf and The Three Pigs in their book collections, but I told them briefly about it. I will try to get that book when we go to Kinokuniya again.

I have always tried to keep things simple in bento-ing, so I did a simple version of big bad wolf.

I prepared some sandwiches and cut them into mini triangles to form the faces of the wolves.

The eyes were cut with this wheel cutter, and then I cut them into halves.

Here’s how I cut the ears.

After that, I placed the cheese on a piece of nori, and cut out an outline for the cheese to make the facial parts more obvious.

The eyes and eyebrows were punched and cut with these Carla’s punchers. Just cut off the wings and tail of the airplane to get the eyebrow.

All the ham and cheese were cut last night, and I only had to cut the fruits (mangoes, oranges and a black plum), pack everything into lunch boxes and work on the details this morning. So, here’s the bentos:

My gal’s bento with the Big Bad Wolf who ate the poor Lamb. I’m not sure if there is an English version of this story, but the book we have is in Chinese. As you can see, the poor lamb is KO with the eyes crossed. I don’t know why my gal likes this story so much…Oh ya, I cut a tiny piece of crab meat to form a tongue for the wolf.

This is my boy’s bento with the Big Bad Wolf and The Three Pigs. The house was cut with the yellow cutter in Bento#114. He said he likes the pigs and the wolf. :)

Hubby said the wolf is not bad enough and I should make the ears stand up. O.o Let me think about how to fix that first…

Since my kids love their bedtime story bentos, maybe I should try other stories next time.

I was just reading the story about dinasaurs at 3lilangels and now I am reading another bedtime story here. haha.

Wish I could put cut out cheese faces on top of strawberries and oranges like you usually do, it would make my kyaraben work so much easier to use cheese instead. but Kimberly and Ashley doesnt like any cheese on top of sweet fruits, or on top of most of their vegetables. Kimberly says it is icky. I wish she isn’t so picky. It takes me too much time to cook egg and kamaboko in replacement instead.

But, great bento, Amy, as usual

Ellena, I think you should give it a try! Little Red Riding Hood!

Allthingspurple, oh, I have never thought of the taste and maybe it’s because my kids din complain about it. They would normally eat those decorative cheese and ham first before they continue with the real meal at the bottom. Maybe they are just hungry la…

Wen and SIG, thanks! *wink wink*

Chinnee, maybe can try to replace cheese with other fruits, like pears? I think it’s more like the color. Christene uses kamaboko, which is always white.

Cute theme but I think there’s an over load of ham for your boy lar…. I’m concern over their health if they take too much of the processed food… very high in sodium and may result in stones…

I think one thing we failed to notice sometimes is the food we have here as compared to those in Japan. Most food in Japan are considered as ‘premiums’ as they used better quality ingredients. Imagine we buy a full pack of 10 sausages at only RM3 or RM4, what do you think they used in there? :P I remembered the so called salmon weiners I bought only cost me less than RM4.

Hi, i would like to ask ‘won’t the design be destroyed or squashed’ when you close the lid of the container? I often see nice bento tat are 3D but I really wonder how they close the lid after that. Can you please enlighten me. Thank you very much. :)

Angeleyes, the sausages so cheap in Penang? I have never bought any when I was in Malaysia, but over here, I normally get those in small quantity and for one smoked sausage, it’s about RM1.50 each. I’m a bit puzzled about the price difference. But you are right about my boy’s bento, I felt the same also after completing it. If you are here in Bangkok, check out the processed food at Siam Paragon or Tops. You might be surprised with the variety, and you can also get those in higher quality. :)

Moohan, some bento boxes are quite tall, and there is a small gap between the lid and the lower compartment. Most of the time, it won’t squash into the food. But if it can’t be closed nicely, just rearrange the food before closing the lid.
