Bento#120: In the Garden Bento
My boy went for a school trip to butterfly farm and train museum yesterday, and he was very happy to see the butterflies. Seeing how happy he was talking about his trip gave me an idea on how to fix today’s bento with butterflies and bees flying in the garden. I wanted to come out with my own idea, so I didn’t do it the same way as I did for Bento#112. You can go to the link and check out R mama’s blog as reference.
Here’s how I prepared the bentos:

I prepared the butterfly wings with this cutter and cheese in different tones. I added pink kamaboko onto the wings to make them more attractive.

For my boy, I fixed the body with 2 quail eggs but for my gal, I cut the shapes from kamaboko. Later on, I cut out a bigger head for her butterfly because she wanted big big eyes!

The bee’s body was cut from a sausage and joined with spaghetti strip. I added nori and a heart pick to form the wings.
Here’s the end result…

My boy’s bento with sweet potatoes, mangoes, rose apples and a strawberry.

Here’s my gal’s butterfly with big big eyes. LOL! I used a divider to separate the fruits from her sandwich to avoid it from getting wet. For my toodler’s convenient, I packed a flag pick for her so that she can easily pick up the fruits.
If I still have the green lunch sheets, I might add in some leaves. But then, the garden is flowery enough huh?

Hallo Mom…
My name Lily from Indonesia. I like you web very much. I also have 5 years and 2 years little daughters…and if i make bento for them they are very happy.. Can you recommend me where I can buy bento accessories?? Thanks so much..
Lily Setiawaty, hi lily, welcome to my blog.
I’m not sure about Indonesia, but if you manage to find Daiso or 100yen there, you can get some stuffs there which are selling at cheaper price. Sanrio is another option too, but it’s more pricey. Another thing is, you can buy online. Check out http://bentomarket.com, a store which I get most of my stuffs from. If you can’t find the stock, just email the store owner when is the next order. Happy bento-ing!
wah…u are so creative!!!!!! i always tot to cut the whole butterfly together, but u did it single sided, in such a creative 3D way somemore…*salute*
btw, u got time to cut and arrange the lil eyes in the morning?
Chinnee, the wings were cut last night and the leftovers were cut into flowers and refrigerated. I only prepared the rest this morning, so pretty fast.
If you have punchers, just punch as much as you need on nori and quick quick put in the details with tweezers. Once you get used to it, it’s pretty quick.
wow….love d butterflies….cute cute !!
pretty bento amy !!!
Wow, I am so impressed and amazed that you always have new ideas. I wonder if you ever track your head thinking of what to prepare for the next day?
You are a very creative bento making mom!
sorry, what I meant to say was “crack” your head instead of “track” :p
HL, of course I have mental blockage moments too. LOL! But I will ask my kids what they want, and if it’s possible, I will take their ideas. But sometimes, they do come out with things that can’t be prepared in time in the morning, then I will tell them next time. LOL! Some times I blog hop around for ideas, or just looking at my toolbox and see which one hasn’t been used yet.
Oh … I simple love your butterflies here coz my girl loves butterfly so much!! Wonder where you got your ideas from coz if for me, I really can’t think of such nice arrangement leh
Thumbs up for you Amy
Caroline, I also dunno how to say, just think butterfly? LOL!
Gorgeous, they are simply lovely. Thanks for all your ideas. I’m not a very creative person.
Another question Amy, how do you manage to arrrange all the details and fruits (as fill-in gap) so ngam in the bento box? You cut the fruits in advance or cut a lot and stuff in whenever there’s gap and keep the rest?
Khongfamily, I just cut the fruits by estimating how much can my kids eat. The leftovers are always packed for hubby and I, topped with freshly cut fruits, of course. Then I just try to stuff everything in.
