Bento#109: Power Ranger Bento
I have to admit that I don’t know much about Power Rangers, and I thought they are the same as Magic Rangers.
I took out my boy’s ranger CDs to get a good look of how his red ranger looked like. I did Red Ranger once for him, with origiri, but still I can’t remember his mask. LOL!

I drew half of the masks of Red Ranger and Yellow Ranger (who’s a girl) on a piece of tracing paper.

Place the tracing paper on a piece of folded nori. Try not to press on hard on the nori to avoid tearing it.

Once you open the nori, it should be the full masks of the rangers. Place them on a piece of cheese and carefully cut an outline with a knife or toothpick. I did the zig zag mask with the knife, and the other one with a toothpick.

I prepared a hard boiled egg and cut it into half.

I covered the first half of the egg with the red part of artificial crab meat.

And for the other half, I mixed the egg yolk to the rice and form a rice ball with food wrapper. If you are wondering about the egg white, I swallowed it. LOL!
Then, it’s all about packing their lunch into lunch boxes, and here they are:

My boy’s lunch with rice, half an egg (the Red Ranger), some stir fried mixed veggie and chicken stew with potatoes. I didn’t give him a lot as the egg could be quite stuffy.

My gal’s Yellow Ranger with the small meal, but in smaller portion. If you use more egg yolk, it should be more yellowish. BTW, the yellow rice will be great for Winnie the Pooh.
Both of them had lunch with a bowl of lotus and peanut soup, which was not shown. So, what did my kids think about their bentos? My boy said, “Mommy, next time, you fix the head, the body, the arms and the legs. Not just the head.” O.o Needless to say, it’s mission impossible and I didn’t promise him!!!
Both kids left the mushroom and my boy left some egg. He said that he’s too full. I had to feed the veggies to my gal who’s running away claiming that she’s done with her lunch just by finishing the chicken and most of the rice. Any tips on encouraging kids to eat veggies? Most parenting books are not working for me.

Wow…. Amy,
This is indeed a big mission for you!!! Power Ranger. Thank God my boy is not a fan of this or else
but i still owed him a Winnie The Pooh Onigiri… mb i can adept your egg yoke with rice idea for the yellow rice ball….
thanks for the idea…..
Wow… the self sketch with the toothpick and knife on the cheese is exactly like how Aichigo’s and the Japanese moms’ tutorial taught us. Is it difficult and time consuming to prick the cheese to cut it with the toothpick? I haven’t tried out this trick yet. Those Japanese moms are really fantastic, aren’t they? I really love learning from them.. Kudos for making the effort, Amy ! This bento must have taken a lot of work with the sketching , and the cutting with the toothpick, not to mention the eggs. Great bento! Keep it up! Wish my kids would egg the yolk rice ball though. Gave them once and both rejected it. sigh..
As for your request on tips on how to get your kids onto vegetables, some kids like vege raw, cos they like to crunch. At least mine does.Ashley and Kimberly likes their bento carrots and tomatoes raw, but not for stir fried vegetables for dinner. If you haven’t tried this already, perhaps some raw carrots or zucchini?
WOW….cool rangers!! Love the red one, so does my son – already bugging me to make one for him. On another note – just wish to commend u on using an egg, would have never thot of that – very creative!
Ellena, the yolk and rice, you try a small portion first because I’m not sure if every kid will like the taste. My gal mixed the rice with her soup, so it’s OK to her. Furthermore, she’s not really fond of egg.
But the yellow rice will be very nice for Pooh!
Allthingspurple, it’s pretty easy cutting the cheese with toothpick, give it a try.
I tried giving my gal raw veggie, but still, she rejects. Sigh…
Javapot, I did the simple rangers, very “cheating” type. LOL! If you have time, try to do the whole body. The Japanese mothers will trace the whole body on tracing paper, then slowly cut out the body parts bit by bit with cheese, or ham. Then, slowly put the parts back into place. I know, it sounds very time consuming.
Oh Oh, Amy, you’re so geng! The Power Ranger, woooo…cool!!
Wow! Super cool bento! I’m so not showing these bentos to my boy, or he’ll be requesting the same. All he’s been getting were sandwiches and CNY cookies, with no deco… haha. Besides being creative, you are also the most hardworking mom. *kowtow*
[...] asking me to fix his favorite rangers for some time, but so far, I’ve only done a simplified Power Ranger bento. I dread the idea of fixing a ranger bento as it’s very time consuming, and I don’t [...]
