Bento#93: An Elephant Bento

I fixed luncheon meat sandwich for hubby and I this morning, and I prepared extra for bentos. Actually, there were extras for hubby and I too. Ah…where’s my diet pill? :P

My kids would rather take cereals in the morning, so I don’t have to worry about them getting overloaded with fat and sodium from the luncheon meat because they only take a piece each. BTW, if you prefer a “healthier” luncheon meat, you can get one from Spam which comes in less sodium and less fat. It’s more pricey, but then, I guess it’s better than the normal ones.

To make their sandwiches looked better, I decorated them with elephants. I bought this elephant cutter from Daiso yesterday, and decided to give it a try. It comes in a set of 3, with a rabbit and a bear. Since my kids picked elephant, ok loh, let’s start with the elephant cutter first.

I cut the shape from cheese.

Turn the cutter over, and lightly press down the kamaboko at the ear area so that you will get the shape of the elephant’s ear. You can do so with carrot or ham as well.

Punch the eyes from nori with a seaweed puncher and cut a few tiny nori strips for the trunk.

I tried to slip the elephants in the sandwiches, and use the sandwich basket first. But too bad, they didn’t turn out nice and the elephants were not obvious.

Thus, I packed their bento meals in Tomica and My Melody lunch boxes instead.

My boy’s Tomica with a sandwich, a cheese elephant, some rose apples and oranges.

My gal’s Melody lunch box has some watermelons. My boy doesn’t take watermelons, so I didn’t pack any for him.

There you have it! Pretty simple to make an elephant bento huh? :)

Jacss, I’m not sure where can you get kamaboko in KL, maybe at those Japanese food section?

Adeline, your comment is caught as spam as I don’t allowed links in comments. I edited your comment ya? :) Just use a baran or divider, the bread will stay fresh that way. But for today’s bento, I used the leather of the rose apples as divider, so the buns will not be moist.

Where did you get your kamaboko in Thailand? (Is it made with Fish???) BTW, do you manage to find any seaweed puncher with eyes, nose, etc in Thailand?? Y elephant looks real leh, you are so creative la :)

Caroline, I got them from Tops, but I saw kamaboko at a few places too. Yes, it’s made from fish, and a piece will last like a month, if you keep it refrigerated. I would normally cut it into smaller pieces and keep them frozen, and use only for like 2 weeks or so. In Thailand, I only managed to find punchers from Daiso, but no faces, and another brand at Paragon. But those at Paragon are so expensive, and no faces too. I got the elephant cutter, and just do exactly the same. LOL!

Hihi! I oso hv this cutter but had no idea what to do with it!! Yay! Now, I got inspiration le! Today was the last of the outlets I went hunting for the carl punchers. (I’ve checked all the large Popular outlets) I oso went to a craft supplier. But so sorry… cant find any face ones… only those which I think you have which is the bunny, bear and the one with triangle ears. Too bad, I cant help you get any here…sorry! :( But I will keep a lookout…if have more faces, will let you know ya? :) Can I ask you, the kamaboko is a full sheet of pink? The ones I see here only has a pink rind? Is it the same thing?

Tona-mama, thanks for looking around, it’s really hard to find the whole collection of Carls huh? :) The kamaboko comes in pink rind and the white part, but I normally just use the pink area while my gal has the white part which tastes like fish balls. But I think we can use the white part too, as replacement of cheese? :)

Hihi shoppingmum, ya.. I think impossible? :( Acutally I like the pink part cos the pink is so nice… it makes really nice cutie details which u have shown. But the ones I saw in spore.. the pink rind is really so thin! Haha! Really a rind kind. I will go ck out the Jap supermkt to see if hv the one u used which is like a sheet – v good! Actually, my son has never tasted kamaboko or fish balls? (so suaku hor?) Well, hope to intro these to him soon. He turns 2 tomoro! :) Tks!

tona-mama, I slice the thin pink layer out from the kamaboko. LOL! It’s quite thin, but we just need a little bit each time. I normally cut one into smaller pieces and freeze them. Only take out a small piece to defroze.
