Bento#85: Happy New Year Bento

I know that it’s a bit late to say Happy New Year now but it’s my first bento for 2009.

After more than a week of vacation, I lost my speed in preparing and packing. It took me an hour to fix today’s bento, and luckily my gal woke up late. In today’s bento, there’s a piece of ham sandwich in each lunch box, and it’s topped with nori. The letters were cut with alphabet cutters and cheese. There are some kiwi and blueberries too. Since it’s the year of ox, I slipped in a quail egg, which supposed to look like a bull. :P

My kids will have bananas too, but I could only slot one in this banana carrying case from Daiso. I thought it was too big, but who knows? The banana by Dales are quite big too! So, maybe I should get another banana carrying case…

Hello. I finally found away to enjoy your blog and a good cup of coffee too – Starbucks gives me the best and fastest response :) But it means that I’ll only be able to pimp on your pix on those occassions.
Anyway, like your innovation with the use of cutters re: the santa beard, also using spaghetti to string/join the sausages together! Can I ask how u get the cheese to stick to the sausage? tks

Arlene, ya, but then, the Dale bananas also very big! LOL!

Javapot, for cheese, I didn’t use any butter, but most of the time, it sticks well, when it’s like “melted” under room temperature. If it’s very cold, it’s harder, so it’s great for cutting. After a few minutes, it should be softer. If I coil it around the sausage, I will use a spaghetti strip to pin it on, but be very careful not to tear the cheese.

Wow .. you are getting creative with your bento …. well done!! Mind me asking
    1) What are you using to secure the nose of the ox?
    2) How do you normally store your nori sheets because they comes in so many pieces?

The bull is super cute. You are most creative!

Hijackqueen, i know, it does look like something “for adults”. LOL!

Caroline, I use spaghetti straps, the thin ones. Ya, for nori, I bought 2 types, one bigger in size which meant for California rolls, but I only cut out a small piece for seaweed punchers, and store that piece away if can still be used for next bento. The other nori is individually packed type, which comes in 3 pieces for each pack. This one a bit salty, so I only use it occasionally, like today, to top the sandwiches. This nori not easy for punchers, it’s too soft.

3lilangels, I saw a few Jap blogs doing bulls with rice, eggs and cheese. So, it’s innovative instead of being creative. LOL! I still rely heavily on Jap blogs because the mothers are so talented!
