When I was at the hospital the other day, bring my baby for a check up, I was chatting with a mother with a 5-day-old-exclusive-breastfed baby. He’s having newborn jaundice and was about the be admitted for photo therapy. She seemed worried as even if he’s her 3rd baby, he’s the only one with jaundice. The other elder kids who are formula fed didn’t have this problem.
Both my kids were exclusively breastfed, and they had jaundice too. Seems like it’s very common for exclusive breastfed babies to have jaundice, and some doctors will advice to stop breastfeeding if you baby is diagnosed with jaundice. However, that is not true. Feeding formula will not prevent baby from having jaundice. Jaundice is caused by bilirubin in the bloodstream of baby, due to his immature liver of elevating bilirubin. This causes the yellow discoloration of the baby’s skin. Most of the time, jaundice is harmless, but there are certain cases where jaundice can be fatal, and it’s best to bring the newborn baby for checking up 3 – 5 days after delivery.
My elder boy was hospitalized because his level of bilirudin was very high. Hubby and I spent the night with him at the hospital, and I breastfed him exclusively as breastmilk has been claimed in speeding up the disposition of bilirudin. Thus, breastfeeding helps jaundice baby to recover faster, so if you doctor asks you to stop breastfeeding your newborn with jaundice, get consultation from paediatrician from baby friendly initiated hospital, or government hospital. Sadly, not all doctors support breastfeeding in our country.
My boy was not being probably treated with photo therapy as his daddy was concerned with his eyes being exposed to the light, and was adjusting the eye pads all night long. He got frustrated as his was disturbed in his sleep and was crying all night long. He wanted to be nursed to sleep when being placed under the light!
No doubt, his reading was still high the next day, but his paediatrician let us bring him home as he was active and had a good appetite. Bear in mind that if a newborn baby seems to be sleepy most of the time, you better wake him up for nursing as most newborns with jaundice are pretty sleepy. Frequent nursing will help him to eliminate the bilirudin faster, so lightly wake him up for feeding, except midnights.
But we brought my boy for checking up on weekly basis, and his bilirudin level dropped when he’s about fullmoon. It’s quite prolong, but doctor confirmed that it’s only breastmilk jaundice, and it’s harmless. As for my second baby, she was not being hospitalized, and just being brought for checking up on weekly basis.
Newborn jaundice is quite scary to first time parents, but your doctor will be able to help you with this, and if you read up more about it, you will gain a better insight of what physical jaundice is about and being less worried.
